Earth Literacy Program Schedule

Earth Literacy Program Since 1990 Genesis Farm has offered programs in Earth Literacy to awaken our capacity to "read" the book of the natural world and to "hear" the voices of its community of life. The specific content of the programs is organized primarily around the insights of geologian Thomas Berry, particularly as set forth in his ground breaking works, The Dream of the Earth and The Great Work. The focus of these programs is to integrate our intellectual understandings with the primary experience of the natural world. This process is surrounded and supported by reflection, journaling, field trips, art, ritual, natural foods cooking and gardening, as well as studies in history, science and ethics. The programs are a response to Brian Swimme's call: "We need a common and compelling vision of the nature of the universe and the role of the human within it. Such a new cosmology must be grounded in the best empirical, scientific understanding, and must be nourished just as deeply by the vibrant cores of our planet's wisdom traditions. Only such a vision has a chance of awakening the deep psychic energies necessary to shape a new era of health, well-being, true prosperity." Our Earth Literacy programs are an invitation to ponder and experience the significance of the Sacred Universe Story as a new transforming context for our lives. Program Format The Earth Literacy program begins with Immersion in the New Cosmology, an intensive exploration of the Universe Story and the Great Work of transforming our lives. The remainder of the program consists of nine week-long seminars, each focusing on a particular aspect of the Great Work. The Earth Literacy program is limited to a small number of participants who live, reflect, and work together in a highly independent and experiential learning process. In addition to the formal studies there is a strong emphasis on immersion in the natural world and developing practical living skills for a more ecological lifestyle. Activities are designed to awaken the participants' creativity and to provide the support of a group of peers who hold the same pursuits. Program Options Many participants choose to take just the first module, Immersion in the New Cosmology. In 2008, it will be offered as the beginning of the long-term Earth Literacy program in August. This year, we also offer Exploring a New Cosmology and Deepening the Great Work in July. Each year, a small number of participants take the entire Extended Earth Literacy program. They live, study and reflect together and are offered activities and experiences that tie the program together into a comprehensive whole. The cost for this program for 2008 is $500 per week, including room and board. Additional costs apply if taking for credit. |
