In the spring of 2005, a group of successful business people joined together to form the region's first sustainable business group. The Sustainable Business Network of the Ridge and Valley is committed to building a “local living economy” in the northwestern region of New Jersey. The Sustainable Business Network of the Ridge and Valley is a member of the Business Alliance for Local Living Economies (BALLE), a national alliance of local business networks.
What is a living economy?
• Living economy communities produce and exchange locally as many products needed by their citizens as they reasonably can. Living economy communities value their unique character while encouraging cultural exchange.
• Living economy public policies support decentralized ownership of businesses and farms, fair wages, taxes and budget allocations, and trade policies that promote local economies and stewardship of the natural environment.
• Living economy consumers appreciate the personal and community benefits of buying from living economy businesses and, if necessary, are willing to pay a premium to secure those benefits.
• Living economy investors value businesses that are community stewards and as such accept a “living return” on their financial investments rather than a maximum return. They recognize the inherent value of a healthy and vibrant community and a sustainable global economy.
• Living economy businesses are primarily independent and locally owned, and value the needs and interests of all stakeholders, while building long-term profitability.
